Research Projects
In light of rapidly diminishing natural resources and the impact that climate change is expected to have on agricultural and the environment, research organisations and academic teams are looking for solutions to the problems society can expect in the next 10 to 50 years. Some of these research teams are identifying what these problems will be and others are seeking to address problems that have already been identified. In agriculture these projects include new technology to improve food production on less land and on less arable land in developing countries; to improve the nutrition of basic staple foods that provide sustenance to millions of poor people. Also, to find new products that will provide new markets for farmers in the developed world; and to ensure that food and agricultural products will be produced in a more environmentally sustainable way.

- Biotechnology R&D in South Africa. 2007
Outline: It is found that South Africa’s biotechnology Research and Development investment is small by international standards, but a leader in the African context. There are collaborative networks, geographical clusters, and industry applications that demonstrate a high concentration of R and D, which may indicate a path towards achieving critical mass in these areas. - Agricultural Biotechnology Network in Africa. A web portal
Outline: Responsible use of biotechnology, in combination with conventional plant breeding, can contribute to the food security of Africa. GM is one important technology, but other non-GM technologies include Tissue Culture, Marker Assisted Selection and Diagnostics. The Agricultural Biotechnology Network in Africa (ABNETA) is made up of people from across Africa who want to discuss, support, develop or use biotechnology in support of agriculture on the continent. Through its portal, country coordinators and activities, ABNETA aims to promote communication and collaboration between researchers, breeders, farmers, entrepreneurs (businesses), journalists, policy makers and donors.
