Issue 5 – August 2002

This Newsletter is intended as a forum for information exchange and dialogue in the build-up to the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD). Forthcoming newsletters will focus on major issues on the agenda of the nine major groups involved and other relevant issues as they arise.

Ubuntu exhibition up and running

The build-up week of the Ubuntu village and the security sweep is over and the exhibitions are officially up and running, with the first official day on Saturday 17th and the official opening ceremony on Monday 19th. Many are still incomplete and finalizing the stands is now more difficult following the security check and accreditation is now required for entry and all belongings scanned. Larger items must be taken to a security check-point at Marlboro, which is one off-ramp/junction from Grayston Avenue going towards Pretoria.

With more than 2500 school children booked to visit the exhibitions in this first week up to Friday 23 August, this is still expected to be the calm before the storm, with the rush of delegates arriving the weekend of the 24-25 August. If you don’t have accreditation for Ubuntu, it is still possible to make a late accreditation, but hurry. For those who have applied and waiting to receive their badges, applications have been sorted according to first name rather than surname, so bear this in mind. Bulk accreditations also seem to be ready more quickly than individual applications. Day passes can be purchased at the gate for R30 (R20 for children under 16).

If you are an exhibitor and you will be travelling to Ubuntu by car, free parking is available at the Athel Gray Park and the entrance is on the corner of North Road where it changes into Westwood. This parking is clearly signposted from both directions as “Park and Walk” and it is very close to the Ubuntu Entrance. There is also additional “Park and Ride” parking on the other side of the M1.

The transport system has been recently finalized and delegates and exhibitors alike must purchase a welcome card (R600 – available at the airport) to gain access to the transport system. The Ubuntu village is no longer considered a transport “hub” but a destination – however, it is still possible to get a connecting bus to NasRec. Full details on the dates of operation and the shuttle hub points are available from wwwjoburgsummit.co.za under the “summit facilities” link.

Colour coding has been used in the table to differentiate locations and information includes dates, times locations and requirements for entry (if any) and size restrictions (if any).
